Landmark Christian School’s production of John Henry was a complete success. The members of The Company Players, under the direction of Mr. Smith, began working on this piece by award-winning playwright John Hardy in August. The cast included Chris Floyd, Bethany Swinford, Kate Bailey, Ebonne Holyfield, Josie Baker, and Katie Parker. With only a limited number of rehearsals, the ensemble buckled down and completed the play by mid-October—just in time to premiere the show at this year’s Georgia Theatre Conference in Gainesville. John Henry was one of nineteen plays chosen throughout the state to perform at GTC. The performance went extremely well, and the Company students were great representatives for the LCS Drama Program. Ebonne Holyfield was named to Georgia’s All-Star Cast for her performance as Rachel, an honor bestowed on only a few student actors.
Immediately following GTC, John Henry was performed over two nights at the Southside Theatre Guild in Fairburn. Both performances were well-attended, and everyone enjoyed the show.
On November 5th, John Henry competed in the GHSA Region 5A One-Act Play Competition at Our Lady of Mercy High School. The play received superior ratings, and Chris Floyd was named Best Actor of the competition. Bethany Swinford and Ebonne Holyfield also received accolades and were named to the All-Star Cast.
John Henry is now available for school performances. It is suitable for all age groups and deals intelligently and creatively with acceptance and tolerance, as well as the importance of self-sacrifice and friendship. E-mail Mark Smith at msmith @landmark-cs.org for more information.
