Music in Elementary
K4 through fourth graders learn about God’s wonderful gift of music. They study its important role in the Bible and the many ways God intended it not only to enrich our lives, but to worship and praise Him both now and for eternity. The music room is a fun place where music is experienced through movement, singing, and playing instruments. In keeping with the National Standards for Music Education, students learn music fundamentals such as rhythm, melody, harmony, tone color, form, and expression. They are also introduced to the works of great composers as well as music of all styles and cultures. Opera plots, Bible stories, and composers’ lives come alive through many skits and activities, and a particular emphasis is placed on American music and its role in our nation’s history. In fourth grade, students learn to play the soprano recorder through the award-winning “Recorder Karate” program, which prepares them for choir and band in upcoming grades.
Windsong Choir
Fifth graders at both campuses comprise this outstanding elementary choral group. Participants gain experience in sight-reading, sight-singing, ensemble participation, and performance etiquette. These skills, along with a more in-depth study of music theory, history, and appreciation, prepare Landmark’s “senior” elementary students for middle school band and chorus. The two campus choirs combine for concerts, where they often perform mass choir pieces with Landmark’s middle and high school choral groups. The Windsong Choir also performs at various community and school events throughout the year.
Fairburn Elementary Praise Team
The elementary praise team meets Thursday afternoons from 3:15 - 4:00 p.m. All 5th graders who are interested in leading praise and worship at the Fairburn chapels are welcome to join. Fourth graders may also join if there are openings.
Music in Middle School
All middle school students participate in a music performance class. Beginning in sixth grade and continuing through the eighth grade, students have the opportunity to participate in Band or Chorus. It is possible and encouraged that students participate in both areas to further expand their musical experience. However, both classes focus on building a solid musical foundation steeped in the basics of music theory and most importantly, the joy of making music. During the middle school years, through the playing of instruments and singing, students continue to develop their music reading skills, as well as skills in sight-reading, tonal memory, playing and singing scales, improvisation and performance.
Chorus is a required elective for sixth and seventh grade students and is open to all eighth graders. The goal is to introduce proper vocal technique, sight singing, and basic musicianship to the students. Students develop good choral singing practices while learning a variety of music and styles in two and three-part harmony.
Band is open to all middle school students. The bands are divided up into a sixth, seventh and eighth grade band and are combined for events such as concerts and pep rallies. Band members perform at the Christmas and Spring Concerts and also have the opportunity to participate in the Pep Band which performs at home football games. The middle school band has received ratings of excellent and superior in competition. The middle school band performs at various state festivals and, thus, will have some extra rehearsals before or after school. Recently the band has traveled to Orlando, Chicago and Gatlinburg. Middle school band students also have the option of trying out for GMEA All-State Band.
Music in High School
Chorale is an open ensemble for all high school boys and girls. In Chorale, students learn basic techniques of proper vocal practices. Chorale offers winter and spring concerts and travels each year to participate in major music festivals held in cities such as Boston, New York, and Los Angeles.
Chamber Singers is an auditioned ensemble that showcases the school's top vocal performers. The Chamber Singers rehearse in class and perform several times each year at school and community concerts and events. The Chamber Singers travel annually to sing in major music festivals held in cities which represent the cultural hubs of our nation, such as Boston, New York, and Los Angeles and consistently receive Superior ratings. Prior to auditioning for Chamber Singers, a student must have completed one year of high school Chorale.
High School Band students continue to strengthen their knowledge of music theory and playing skills. In addition to performances at the Christmas and Spring Concerts, students are encouraged to participate in the pep band that performs at home football games. The high school band has received awards of excellent and superior ratings at competitions in previous years. The band has recently traveled to Chicago, Orlando and Gatlinburg and performs at various state festivals. To be a member of the high school band, students should have the equivalent of four years of musical training on their instrument. Band members are encouraged to seek out private instruction and are also encouraged to tryout for GMEA All-State Band.
Using their God-given talents, students from elementary through high school are able to experience the joy of music and performing for others.
