Elementary School Summer Academic Assignments

Last week, the Fairburn fourth graders were visited by Landmark parent, Lt. Col. Terry Farrell who recently returned from serving our country in the Middle East.  Lt. Col. Farrell came to thank the students for the care packages and cards he received from them while he was overseas. All year, the fourth grade students have prayed for Lt. Col. Farrell and for his fellow service men and women.  The students were so happy to see that he was home safely. The students loved hearing about his experiences while overseas as well as trying on his equipment!

The Fairburn first graders ended the year with a unit study on the continent of Africa.  During our study we had two dynamic speakers.  Mr. Lee Walton, father to Antony, brought in a power point presentation on Egypt.  He showed the different land forms in Egypt, Hieroglyphic writings, the Sphinx, and much more.  The children learned that 90% of the population is Muslim and 10% Christian.  The second speaker to share with the students was our own Coach Fred Gilkeson.  He was so enthusiastic as he told the children about the people in Tanzania and how they lived.  He showed pictures of many that he had met and some that gave their hearts to Christ.   Coach G. shared with them how he and his mission team told the people they met about Jesus.

Mrs. Henry's Peachtree City first graders have been busy, busy, busy learning about rocks, soil, seeds and plants. We took a field trip to Vulcan Materials, a rock quarry in Lithia Springs. We planted grass seeds in “people” planters and gave them Mohawks and pony tails. We also learned about butterflies and have enjoyed watching tiny caterpillars turn into beautiful painted lady butterflies. Most recently we learned all about Mexico. On Friday, students brought in items from Mexico to share with the class. We ate chips, cheese, and salsa at our very own Mexican fiesta. We also had a piñata and learned our very best Mexican Hat Dance!   In math we recently learned to tell time and how to measure lots of things. Whew, our brains are ready for summer (and so is Mrs. Henry)!

.

Fairburn's K4 class took a field trip to Cochran Mill Nature Center on Monday, May 11. The children learned about the rescue program that the center offers, and were able to touch a snake, turtle, iguana, and alligator! After learning about reptiles, they were able to make their own bird feeders from pinecones and birdseed. For lunch, they took a hike out to the "big rock" where they enjoyed a picnic lunch and got to explore over to the waterfall. It was a great day.

.

.

The 5th grade science classes in Fairburn and PTC have been studying oceanography.  They completed the study by dissecting a starfish and learning about how they move, eat and breathe with the help of an unusual water vascular system.  The 4th grade science classes in Fairburn and PTC have been learning about the various phyla of the animal kingdom.  After studying the body systems of mammals, they dissected the fetal pig.  They observed the digestive, respiratory, circulatory and excretory systems.  Thanks to Dr. Baggett, Mr. Calsbeek, Mrs. Rogers and Mrs. Carter for helping us out with dissections!  See photo galleries above.

Attention Middle and High School Girls Interested in Playing Softball Next Fall

The middle school and high school softball teams are now beginning to form. We are looking for rising 6th grade through senior girls to fill our 2009-10 softball teams. We are looking forward to an exciting year for Landmark softball, with the varsity team looking to improve on the Region runner-up status of this year, and the middle school team to produce another exciting season! No experience is necessary!  Mrs. Greer is currently gathering a list of interested girls so that she can plan some fun summer activities for the teams. GIRLS STATE TRACK MEET

2009

I will begin with a brief overview from the region meet write-up.  This was a tough and difficult task for our fabulous five young ladies.  We lost two high scoring, scholarship athletes along with three others who did not return to track this season, and acquired one freshman. With our region being the toughest in the state, and this years state competition the toughest I have seen for quite awhile, we did well.  Four of our girls advanced from the region to the State Meet.  Three of these girls competed at the State Meet last year, two scoring points.  This year, each of our four girls advanced to the finals at State and scored points, and competed with our best performances of the year. How about that!  Our four girls, Alex Glaize, Kenzie Thrasher, Lauren Toomer, and Abby Glaize scored a total of 24 points, and finished 9th place as a team.

Here are the results of our girl’s performances:

Kenzie Thrasher      Pole Vault - 8'6"/5th place, 100 Hurdles -16:06/4th place,

                                300 Hurdles - 48.84/6th place

                                Total Points Scored:  13

Abby Glaze              300 Hurdles - 48:18/3rd place

                                Total Points Scored: 6

Lauren Toomer        400m - 61:16/6th place

                                Total Points Scored:  3

Alex Glaze                 Discus - 96'1"/7th place

                                 Total Points Scored:  2

Coach Judi Pickett extends a Huge Thank You to all the elementary parents who helped with Perimeter Track and Field Day events.  We could not have done it without you.  Have an active and safe summer and God Bless you.

Girls Summer Basketball:  Reminder to parents of middle and high school girls, if you have not already done so, please turn in the registration form for camp and/or clinic sessions this summer.
