Congratulations, Georgiana!

Landmark’s Georgiana Moody was awarded the Sports Champions of Greater Atlanta Award.  The 14 award winners celebrated with their families and guests at a banquet at the Cobb Galleria on April 16. Georgia State University head football coach Bill Curry was the keynote speaker.  The winners were chosen for outstanding performance in athletics, as well as scholastic achievements and character.  WSB-TV is producing a one-hour special of the event to be televised Friday May, 22, at 9 p.m. You won't want to miss the show, so tune in or set your Tivo!  Coach Thorn was the recipient of this award in 2004 and Kaity Bulger was honored in 2008.  Landmark has been well represented.

Mrs. Nadreau’s 4th grade class in PTC earned an edible art day for their great behavior and had a fun time creating some great Laffy Taffy sculptures.

.

The 4th grade Peachtree City class recently visited a Pre-K class at Palmetto Elementary. The students partnered with a Pre-K student (or 2) and spent the morning playing games, doing crafts, and reading books. After enjoying lunch together, the 4th graders presented their Pre-K buddies with a personalized bucket containing some fun items for them to enjoy this summer. The 4th graders earned money or sacrificed a special treat themselves in order to give jump ropes, coloring books, Play-Doh, sidewalk chalk, and more to these precious children. What a blessing to see the joy on all the children’s faces as they made new friends and wonderful memories!  .

.

The Fairburn 4th grade classes recently led worship during the noon service at the Atlanta First United Methodist Church. The congregation enjoyed some spirit-filled music and joined the students in clapping and singing several songs. The students were a shining example of Jesus!  The sermon was delivered by two of our 5th graders, Ben Ellison and Camden Cusumano. They spoke about how understanding grace and mercy affects how we live. They shared several examples of how God has shown them grace and mercy in their lives, including giving them wonderful teachers!  Dr. Jim Ellison, dad to LCS students Will and Ben, treated the students to lunch and a tour of the church. On a historic note:  the bell in the bell tower at AFUMC is the same bell that rang to warn the people of Atlanta that Sherman was coming! It was a fantastic trip!

Landmark students have a long history of high achievement on these exams, and were taught by Spanish teachers, Claudia Calleiro, Tiffany O’Neill, and Emily Wesche.

BOY’S STATE TRACK MEET - 2009

This year's team had a tough act to follow.  The 2008 team had much more experience and surprised everyone by winning the GHSA State Meet for the 8th time.  This year we had only one member return from the 2008 team.

In this years region meet, Landmark qualified for State in the 4x100 relay (Nick Harris, Carson Barnett, Marlon Bryan, and Robert Trotter).  They exceeded expectations by running their best time, by far for the year.  Their time of 44.0, however, failed to qualify them for the finals.

Josh Herr qualified for State by pole vaulting 11’at the region meet, and won 1st place at Region.  In the State Meet, his first attempt was 10’6”, and he unfortunately failed to make his opening height.  Josh is a freshman and has three years left to train and gain more experience.

Our only other qualifier for State was senior, Marlon Bryan. Marlon was our only returning member from last year’s team.  He won the region in the triple jump (44’7.5”).  In the State Meet, his best jump was a little over 43’, and he placed 6th, which earned Landmark 3 points.

Last year Marlon did not qualify for the State competition in the hurdles.  This year it was a different story.  He won 1st place in the region in both the 110 and 300 hurdles.  He was only able to break 15.0 in the 110’s one time, in the region prelims with a 14.9.  He was ranked 2nd going in to the State meet behind a hurdler from Darlington.  In the 110 finals, Marlon upset their runner with a personal best time of 14.99.  The best was yet to come.

In the 300 hurdle finals, Marlon was a step behind over the last two hurdles, and just as they got to the finish line, Marlon actually took a dive across the line and hit the track flat out!  Most everyone felt that he may have ended up in 2nd place – and we had to wait until the awards presentation to find out the end result.  As the awards were presented, it was revealed that Marlon came out on top – by a fraction!  Everyone went wild – not only did he win; he broke Ben Stout’s long standing school record of 39.36 with a 38.99!

Marlon scored 23 points in the State Meet, which placed Landmark in 6th place for Class A in the State.  That’s called doing your best in the end, where it is supposed to be done!  Congratulations Marlon – State Champion in the 110 and 300 hurdles!!
