Are you tired of feeling confined to the tedious walls of a cell phone screen? Do you find yourself gleefully eavesdropping on rich conversations in the coffeeshop or even the latest podcast or Ted talk? More importantly, can you see yourself sitting in your own place at the table, exploring the curiosities, the complexities, and the convictions of the world’s greatest writers in a community of sharp minds and grateful hearts? Then join us as we examine truth, goodness, and beauty in a wide array of great books throughout Western civilization. By entering what Mortimer Adler calls the “Great Conversation,” students will experience the art of civil discourse, the skill of close reading, the power of inductive and deductive reasoning, the confidence to navigate group discussion, and the importance of evaluating our present concerns in light of past traditions, all characteristics of a successful student and an attractive candidate for university study. As Plato once said, “the object of education is to teach us to love what is beautiful,” and this course aims to achieve exactly that: to produce students who know the truth and come to love it well. This course is offered as a semester elective credit for Landmark Christian School. It is taught by the English Department Chair, Mr. Matt Huff.
