How do you develop habits of the mind without first addressing the heart? A survey of faculty, students and parents indicated that the root of this issue included factors such as social and parental pressures, social development, school-life balance, academic assessments, a lack of sleep, and time management. Clearly, these factors are a mix of both habits of the heart and habits of the mind.
Growth Mindset. Fixed Mindset. Those terms have been thrown around quite a bit in the last five to six years. What exactly are we to do as parents, educators, and mentors to instill that growth mindset in our middle and high school teens?
On Thursday, October 17, our high school students along with their advisory leaders, participated in the 2nd annual Serve Day. Serve Day is a day set aside for our students and faculty to put their faith in action by serving in and around the local community.

Landmark Christian School is thrilled to announce the hiring of Reed McCormack as the new varsity and junior varsity golf coach. McCormack is a 1992 graduate of Georgia State University with a degree in Business Administration. He comes to Landmark with successful experience at multiple levels of golf and has served as a certified PGA Professional teaching many golf clinics and individuals during his career.
Dr. Jim Lee named as new member of the Georgia GOAL Advisory Committee. Lisa M. Kelly, president of Georgia GOAL Scholarship Program, Inc., has invited Dr. Jim Lee to serve a three-year term as a new member of the GOAL Advisory Committee.
Landmark alum, Charles Long (Class of 2008) has been named one of the 2019 Patt Tillman Foundation Scholars. Following his commissioning from West Point, Charles served as an officer in the United States Army.
Building upon excellence in education, Landmark Christian School and the Fairburn community broke ground on May 6 to renovate the formerly segregated Fairburn Public Elementary School. The ceremony marked a new beginning for Landmark, South Fulton County, and the City of Fairburn by formally embarking upon a $10,000,000 renovation and construction of a new high school. Landmark is renovating the historic building that once was used to divide the community and constructing one of the most innovative and unifying schools in the state and nation.
Many people believe that in sports there is no better story than a team going undefeated and winning a championship. For the Landmark Christian School middle school girls soccer team this season, they showed that losing a game in the regular season and then avenging that loss in the championship game makes for an even better story. The middle school Lady War Eagle soccer team finished the 2019 season with a 12-1 record and won the GICAA Region 2 Championship and the GICAA District 1 State Championship.
Landmark Christian School is thrilled to announce that legendary former NFL linebacker Clay Matthews Jr. will be joining Landmark as a varsity football consultant. Matthews was a four-time Pro Bowler for the Cleveland Browns, where he played 16 seasons, before finishing his career with the Atlanta Falcons.

This spring at the Georgia Middle School State Championships held at Parkview High School, the best runners in the state ran in the race.
A huge and heartfelt ‘Thank you’ to the sponsors, donors and guests who made it possible for Landmark Christian School to raise more than $330,000 during its 2019 Gala, Race to the Future!, held at the Porsche Experience Center on May 4. With 400 guests present, Dr. McMaster shared his innovative vision for the school’s future. Landmark students showcased their talent in art, entertainment, engineering & technology, and photography. It was a fabulous night!
The Georgia Seal of Biliteracy recognizes high school graduates who have attained a high level of proficiency in one or more languages in addition to English. Congratulations to Honors Mandarin IV student, Jarrett Mohs, for taking the HSK test at Emory University and earning the Biliteracy seal this year. Jarrett Mohs was also selected as the recipient for the Star Student Award by GCLE, an organization for Chinese educators in Georgia.

Coach Hahn comes to Landmark with a wide coaching resume ranging from the middle school through the collegiate level. Landmark Middle and High School Art Students recently participated in the Peachtree City Kiwanis Art and Music Showcase. To participate, students had to be members of Key Club or be residents of Fayette County. Several Landmark students won in various categories.
Landmark student, Rian Philip was 1 of 1500 juniors selected to compete for the 2019 GreyStone Washington Youth Tour. Students studied provided materials about GreyStone and the history of rural electrification then took an exam. The five students with the highest test scores receive an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C. to participate in this life-changing leadership event this summer.
Each summer, the Gilder Lehrman Institute offers academically rigorous Teacher Seminars for K-12 educators. These highly competitive one-week seminars are open exclusively to participants in Gilder Lehrman’s free Affiliate School Program. Mr. Wilson, HS Math Teacher, and Mr. Osei, Engineering Teacher, attended the 31st annual Teachers Teaching with Technology International Conference. Mr. Wilson presented two sessions focusing on different technologies to help develop student understanding of algebraic concepts, while Mr. Osei discovered new ways of teaching and engaging students through different activities and technologies.
Landmark Christian School has named Lady Hardmon Grooms as its new varsity head girls basketball coach. Coach Grooms comes to Landmark after serving as the head girls basketball coach at Greater Atlanta Christian School in Norcross since 2014. In her five seasons leading the Spartans her teams appeared in three final fours, including state runner-up in 2017.

The Lord instructs us to love Him but to also love our neighbors. This past October, Landmark high school students and faculty put that into action by participating in the first ever Serve Day. Students and faculty members were divided up to serve on different projects in and around the Fairburn community.
Thanks to the amazing Landmark community, we shattered former GOAL records by receiving 112 tax redirections totaling over $312,000! Last year, we received 40 pledges (the highest ever) totaling $155,000. GOAL scholarships are for students transitioning to Landmark from public schools
Congratulations to Clark Mahaffey for being recognized as the Landmark 2019 STAR Student. To qualify for this recognition, a student must be in the top 10% of their class and have earned the highest SAT score in their class during a single test administration. Clark selected Mr. Wilson as his STAR teacher. Mr. Wilson has been selected as the STAR Teacher for the 5th consecutive year and 11th time overall.
Despite the 64-degree weather, Landmark hosted a "snow day" for the students by hauling in two truckloads of snow on January 7th and 8th. The students, faculty, and staff enjoyed snowball fights and building snowmen!
