If you’ve ever attended a summer camp, then you already know that there are a plethora of benefits. If you haven’t attended a camp, you might not be aware of all of the benefits summer camps can offer your child. While summer camps can be fun for students in elementary, middle, and high school, they are so much more than that! Camps help students discover their passions and develop their skills that they might not otherwise have the opportunity in the classroom. Here are 6 ways that summer camp can benefit your child and why should you consider enrolling your child in camp.

  1. Developing new interests – Core classes are necessary and students learn valuable information throughout the school year, but some schools are limited in providing additional elective offerings or the time needed during the school day for students to explore other interests or for the development of talent. Summer camps allow students to develop and explore new interests while gaining experience. They also allow students to dive deeper into an area and increase their expertise and skill level.
  2. Forging new friendships – Many students find it challenging to break out of their comfort zone long enough to meet new people and make new friends outside of their usual group. By putting students in a collaborative setting, such as a summer camp, they may meet new friends or see their peers in a new light, thus forming friendships. Summer camp can be an excellent way for students to make new friends with similar interests from inside and outside of their school.
  3. Building confidence – While your child might be interested in a specific club or joining a sports team during the school year, their lack of skill level or knowledge of the sport/club may hold them back. With a smaller number of participants and focused learning, students often feel more comfortable participating in summer camps, which allow them to meet new people, learn new skills, hone existing skills, and build their confidence.
  4. Unplugging – In a world where children and teens are constantly self-engaged in technology like social media and video games, summer camps that focus on collaborative learning through sports, arts, and other hands-on activities can provide more face to face interactions and help them to unplug and focus on their surrounding environment.
  5. Learning useful skills – In summer camps, students have the opportunity to not only develop new interests and dive deeper into their passions, but they also gain a sense of community and learn new social skills. Summer camps have been known to challenge students, help them grow as individuals, help them learn the value of teamwork, help students develop perseverance from exploring new activities, and become the best version of themselves.
  6. Determining career paths - Summer camps often offer opportunities for students to explore various career paths. With camps such as Mandarin, entrepreneurship, music, art, STEM, dance, drama, and leadership, students have the ability to discover and experience a multitude of career fields.
