Landmark Christian School is thrilled to announce that legendary former NFL linebacker Clay Matthews Jr. will be joining Landmark as a varsity football consultant. Matthews was a four-time Pro Bowler for the Cleveland Browns, where he played 16 seasons, before finishing his career with the Atlanta Falcons.

“I’m excited to see what they [Landmark Christian School] are doing. They are at the beginning of rebuilding the football program. It’s marvelous,” football consultant Clay Matthews Jr. said during a Radio 92.9 The Game interview. “I’m excited to see how they are rebuilding their program and the school.”

Clay Matthews Jr. brings a wealth of experience to Landmark having played 278 games over 19 NFL seasons. Matthews currently stands third on the NFL all-time tackles list and was a three-time NFL All-Pro selection. Additionally, Matthews was a 2019 NFL Hall of Fame semifinalist. Prior to the NFL, Matthews was a first round pick in 1978 out of the University of Southern California, and in 2005 was inducted into their Athletic Hall of Fame. Matthews has most recently been the defensive coordinator at Oaks Christian School in Westlake, California.

“Over the years, I have seen high school players move on to college and the NFL. The one common thread is their agreement that Coach Matthews is the best football coach they have ever had at any level. We are thrilled that he will share his philosophy, experience, enthusiasm, and faith with our players and coaches,” Head of School Dr. Jason McMaster said. “Clay is one of the finest football coaches and mentors I’ve ever seen in my career.”
Matthews comes from a family of legendary football players. His father, Clay Sr., played four seasons in the NFL, and his brother Bruce Matthews was elected to the NFL Hall of Fame in 2007 as an offensive lineman. Clay Matthews Jr. has two sons who have also played in the NFL, including Clay Matthews III who was a six-time pro bowl linebacker for the Green Bay Packers.

Led by varsity coach and NFL stand-out, Mike Sherrard, hall of fame member Bill Redell, and a talented coaching staff including former collegiate and professional players and seasoned coaches, the War Eagles kick-off the season at home against St. Anne-Pacelli on August 23, 2019.
