Landmark Christian School National Merit Finalist (x 2!)
We are pleased to announce that two Landmark seniors, Olivia Hardeman and Sammie McGurl, were selected as 2021 National Merit Finalists! This is a tremendous honor as more than 1.5 million juniors in 21,000 high schools across the country entered into the 2021 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2019 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Out of those taking the test, only 15,000 across the nation were selected to earn the title of Finalist! Olivia and Sammie now advance for consideration of a $2500 National Merit Scholarship to be announced in the coming months.
Process for Selection
According to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, top scorers on the 2019 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test are selected as Semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors. A Semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, and write an essay.
To become a Finalist, the Semifinalist and a high school official must submit a detailed scholarship application in which they provide information about the Semifinalist’s academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, and honors and awards received.
Merit Scholars will be selected from the approximate 15,000 Finalists and are selected on the basis of their skills, accomplishments, and potential for success in rigorous college studies, without regard to gender, race, ethnic origin, or religious preference.
Prepared to Impact the World for Jesus Christ
After Landmark, Olivia plans to attend Georgia Tech to study biochemistry. Following her college graduation, she will pursue a Doctorate of Pharmacy Degree. Sammie hopes to attend the University of Notre Dame and pursue a Doctorate of Physical Therapy.
