Landmark Christian School is excited to announce Mr. Nick Mayhew ('09) and Mrs. Katy Kirbow ('09) Mayhew are coming home!
Mr. Mayhew will be working with the Science Department, teaching Advanced Placement Chemistry and other science/engineering courses. "It’s wonderful to see one of our alum who has decided on teaching to invest in the lives of young people," says Mrs. Amy Harriton, Associate Head of School.
Mr. Mayhew graduated from North Georgia College & State University with a Bachelors in Science, majoring in physics, with a mathematics minor and received a Master’s of Science in condensed matter physics from the University of Georgia. He spent the past four years teaching AP Chemistry at North Oconee High School. "Leaving will be bittersweet,' he says, "my students are great, the people I work with are great. I've taught a range of science classes, I've connected with many of the students, and I appreciate the faculty and staff at North Oconee.” He will miss continuing to be present and watch them grow.
Nick + Katy
Nick Mayhew asked Katy Kirbow out on a date towards the beginning of their senior year of high school at Landmark. He attended North Georgia College & State University while she was attending the University of Georgia - they were married nine years ago. Mrs. Mayhew graduated from UGA's School of Veterinary Medicine and is starting an equine veterinary practice. She was inspired, in part, by her life-long love of horses and love of science.
Science was Pivotal
The couple is moving from Watkinsville this summer. They look forward to being closer to family. Mr. Mayhew has longed for the opportunity to teach science on a deeper and more meaningful level - through the lens of the gospel - since being impacted by Dr. Daniel Wesche as a teacher long ago. "Dr. Wesche led me into a deeper relationship with Christ through history - it made a huge impression on me and I hope to create a similar experience for my students."
Mr. Mayhew shares, "Katy also had Dr. Wesche for AP Euro History, and she still says, his class was one of the most challenging she's ever had! And she's way smarter than me."
Landmark Campus Pastor, Mr. Fred Gilkeson (Coach G), also made a big impression on Mr. Mayhew. He says, "By far, my favorite class at Landmark was Adventure PE; it's probably not legal anymore - but back then, it was the best." During Adventure PE, boys would go with Coach G over to the old school (AUX) building to explore, test their courage, and just have fun. Mr. Mayhew continues, "We did all sorts of things - we played "Man Hunt," skinned a deer, somebody ate a snake, we did skeet-shooting." Coach G affirms all this is true and then some, including catching and frying up crawdads from the creek and cicadas from the trees.
In his free time, Mr. Mayhew plays Ultimate Frisbee; he plans to help with the Ultimate Frisbee club offered on campus.
Welcome home, Nick Mayhew! Landmark Christian School is very excited to have Mr. Mayhew join us for the 2021-2022 school year.
