All Rise!

For students passionate about law, public speaking, or problem solving, joining the Mock Trial Team at Landmark Christian can be very rewarding. In Mock Trial, students prepare legal cases and present them in specific roles, as a team, in front of a judge in courtroom settings. In addition to gaining knowledge of legal proceedings, participation aids in the development of many critical life skills, from teamwork to critical analysis, to listening, speaking, writing and acting.
This year, the Mock Trial team at Landmark Christian School completed its eighth season, advancing to mid-level competition. Mock Trial was especially difficult in 2021, with participation only allowed virtually. Despite the challenges, out of a field of 99 teams, the 2021 Landmark Mock Trial Team, composed of dedicated and talented students in 9th-12th grades, advanced to mid-level competition representing the top 64 teams. Congratulations to three Landmark Christian team members receiving individual recognition during the preliminary level of competition.

Authentic - No argument here
The courtroom competition season begins with receipt of a case booklet provided by the Georgia Mock Trial Association. This booklet contains details about the fictional case students will be arguing for or against, including witness statements, pre-trial stipulations, exhibits, and more. Each Mock Trial team in Georgia will be presenting the same case with strict guidelines and no additional sources allowed.

As a team, students work to develop cases for both the prosecution and defense and must present both sides’ arguments during competition. Each side appoints students for the roles of trial attorneys, witnesses, pre-trial attorneys, a bailiff and a timekeeper. Students work together to develop strong, comprehensive, well-developed cases in preparation for the courtroom competition.

Mock Trial is tightly structured, all of the trial components are strictly timed, and students must be able to think quickly on the fly and communicate their points in a concise yet effective and convincing manner. In the courtroom in front of a judge, and following all protocols, teams present opening statements, direct examinations, cross-examinations, closing arguments, exhibits, and more. Some elements are developed and rehearsed many weeks before the courtroom appearance (dress rehearsals included); however, just as in real life, some components and the closing arguments require quick thinking in response to the competition’s presentation.

Based on performances, schools are scored, individual awards are announced, and winners advance to regional and state competitions.

Just the Facts, Ma’am
Former Landmark parent, Mrs. Sally Rebel, and 7th grade Landmark English teacher, Mrs. Jeanette Owens, shared the original vision and launched Mock Trial at Landmark Christian in 2004. Mr. Jason Schultz and Mr. John Lovell, lawyers by profession and former Landmark parents, also helped develop the program. Mr. Schultz was the lead attorney for seven seasons, leaving after his youngest daughter graduated from Landmark. Mrs. Owens remains the Landmark faculty coach. We are thankful for this year’s Landmark community volunteers; attorneys - Mr. Andrew Smith (uncle of Landmark student, Caden Smith) and Mr. Alexandre Kachin, and parent volunteer (two years) Mrs. Lisa Beerman.

The Verdict
Through the years, Landmark Christian has faced very tough competitors; larger and more experienced schools. Despite the formidable opponents, Landmark Christian has been successful each year and was named the Region 12 Champion Mock Trial Team for the 2017 season. In addition to the 2021 awards winners, Landmark students received many Attorney and Witness awards through the years.
