Leading by Serving: The Terek Family

The Terek family, Matt, Leslie, Mattie, and William have been a Landmark family for eleven years. Mattie, now in 11th grade, began in first grade, and William, now in ninth grade, began in K5. The Terek family has a passion for giving back not only in the greater Atlanta community but within Landmark Christian School.
Leslie is originally from Fayette County while Matt is from the Jacksonville/Ponte Vedra area of Florida. Leslie’s mom was a second-grade school teacher in Fayette County for 30 years and her father worked for Georgia Power in facilities. Perhaps it is this personal connection to these occupations that creates fuel for their passion for service to the incredible teachers and to the facilities team at Landmark.
The Tereks have always had a heart for giving back to the community, school, and others. Leslie shares that one day about ten years ago she and her daughter Mattie served at a homeless shelter. When the day was over Mattie said, “I want to make 100 bags for the homeless.” Wow! Leslie wasn’t sure how they were going to accomplish the large task but her daughter saw a need and had the heart to serve others so Leslie wanted to do everything she could to make this happen. What started with 100 bags for the homeless has now grown to over 800 bags and 600 snack bags. One hundred people donate or come to the Terek’s home to participate in this service project called, “It’s Not About You - Christmas Party.” Leslie shared that the name seems funny since most children expect a gift when they come to a party, however, this party is about giving to others. During this party, the Terek’s clear the main floor of their home and dedicate each room to a different project from backpack buddies for students, supplies for homeless shelters, and cards for the military, to name a few.
At Landmark Christian, though Leslie and her family’s impact is large, you may not know they are catalysts behind the gifts. They serve quietly and humbly, giving back and creating a sense of community. Whether it is serving in the classroom, Admissions, Advancement, lunch for the facilities team, treats for the faculty and staff, or breakfast for the girls basketball team, this family demonstrates servant leadership and volunteerism.
The Tereks are but one family at Landmark Christian who live their life with 100% War Eagle attitude. There are many families to whom we say thank you! We are so grateful for a serving community that believes in and supports our core value, “Serving is a choice we make every day.”
There are many ways to volunteer and serve in our community. Landmark encourages families to become involved. There is a pathway to connect for everyone. Contact Marty Riggs, mriggs@landmark-cs.org for more information on ways to plug in at Landmark.
Together we are ONE. Matthew 5:16 - In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
Every student prepared to impact the world for Jesus Christ
