Denise Pope, co-founder of Challenge Success and Stanford University Professor, joined faculty, staff, and parents for a special presentation on researched-based strategies for reducing academic stress without sacrificing achievement; increasing resiliency, creativity, and well-being in children; and establishing a healthy home environment to help balance the demanding work of growing up. As the author of "Doing School: How We Are Creating a Generation of Stressed-Out, Materialistic, and Miseducated Students," she explains how students are busy going through the motions of school. Instead of digging deep into content, students are focused on managing their workload and getting good grades.

At the beginning of the school year, Sir John Jones, a motivational and educational speaker from England, met with faculty and staff. Knighted for his achievements in education, his inspiring message encouraged educators to be "magic weavers." In his book, Magic Weaver, he provides the following analogy:

"If the teacher understands the qualities (thread) of the student and recognises the significant beauty of each of their talents, they can use these threads to weave some magic in a child’s life each day. Each day the student (carpet) has another piece of magic woven into their life, and different ‘weavers’ add to this picture. As the days and years pass, the picture becomes clearer, the colours become brighter and the student can see the progress as the picture on the carpet grows."
