Landmark Christian School announces the appointment of Roby Ross as Head Track & Field Coach to follow in the footsteps of his mentor and coaching legend, Bill Thorn. Ross is also named to join Head Coach Mike Sherrard as Associate Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator of the War Eagles varsity football team.

Ross, a 1990 graduate and valedictorian of Landmark Christian with 23 years of coaching experience, is primed for his new roles. His record of success in track is among the best. Serving 23 years as assistant track coach, Ross was named Atlanta Track Club Coach of the Year 9 times, holds 15 Team State Championships, 6 Team State Runners-up, and a remarkable 6 consecutive state titles with boys and girls teams.

Ross is ready. He says, “The Lord blessed me with an incredible opportunity to coach young men and women at Landmark. God used athletics in a powerful way to impact and shape my life as a young man at Landmark. What a unique privilege to be used by God to do the same for others! It is truly special to witness the changes God makes in the lives of young people through the trials, training, failures, and victories provided in athletics. I love building relationships with young people and pointing them toward their Creator each step of the way. Being coached by Bill Thorn and later coaching alongside him for 23 years has been one of the greatest blessings of my life. Lord willing, I will help carry on the legacy of excellence in the track program that Coach Thorn built at Landmark.”

Bill Thorn passes the baton to Ross at the end of this track season. Thorn says, “This young man has had a tremendous influence in coaching young men and ladies. Without a doubt he will be successful. He is a man of his word. I wish him the best in every way.”

In January, Landmark announced the hiring of two high-file coaches; former NFL player and All-American, Mike Sherrard became the War Eagle varsity head football coach and Bill Redell, member of the College Football Hall of Fame, and long-time successful head coach, was hired as Strategic Advisor and Head of College Recruitment. Sherrard comments, “I’m very excited to have Roby join the coaching staff for the Landmark Christian varsity football team. Coach Ross brings a wealth of football knowledge to the team and his spiritual being will shape the players into godly young men.”

Ross brings experience, success, energy, and his love of the players and game to football, too. As a varsity assistant football coach at Landmark for 21 years, Ross was twice selected as Region 5A Assistant Coach of the Year, won 5 Region Champions, was state runner up, made two state semifinal appearances, and participated in the state play playoffs 17 times with a winning record of 151-88.

Ross says, “I am extremely excited about working with Mike Sherrard and Landmark varsity football. I'm impressed with what Mike brings and look forward to what the Lord does through him for our football program. I've missed the feels of high school football and the daily interaction with the young men. I can't wait to get started!”

Dr. Jason McMaster, Head of School for Landmark Christian is building a world-class team of coaches, faculty and staff. He says, “Students deserve our very best, whether on the field, in the classroom, or on the stage. The team of godly leaders and mentors that we have and are assembling at Landmark are the top in their field and I am proud to announce that Roby will play a significant role in our athletic program.”

Many of Coach Ross’ athletes continued their careers in college playing at the following schools: Air Force, Albany State, Arkansas, Belmont, Carson Newman, Clemson, Colorado State, Dartmouth, Davidson, Furman, Georgia, Georgia Southern, Georgia Tech, Kennesaw State, Milsaps, Samford, Savannah State, Savannah College of Art and Design, Southern Mississippi, Stetson, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Virginia, West Georgia, Wofford, and others. The bond formed with his athletes remains. His former athletes return to Fairburn on occasion to talk life, faith, and family and share funny stories.

Ross graduated from Berry College with a Health and Physical Education degree. He and his wife of 17 years, Morgin, have two children enrolled at Landmark, Jackson (6th grade) and Avery (4th grade). Morgin is the Landmark elementary art teacher.
